St Helens Virtual School Transition to High School

Dream. Aspire. Achieve.

The transition from primary to secondary school can be traumatic for some children and we aim to ensure that the transition process is as smooth as possible for all our Looked After Children.

This process starts in the Year 6 Autumn Term PEP meeting when we ask for details of the high school that has been applied for. This is to ensure that we can link schools, children and staff together as soon as possible.

At the Spring term PEP we ask if any additional transition support will be needed for the child to attend their chosen high school. This can then be picked up by the PEP Co-ordinators as soon as the allocation for schools have been made in March.

During the Summer Term, high School designated teachers and pastoral staff are invited to the Summer Term PEP meeting for each child. This ensures that all staff have a very good 'picture' of the child and, if any additional transition visits or activities are needed, these can be planned for.

All Looked After Children should be invited to any Summer Schools at their new high school.

Additional pastoral support should be built into their PEP if this is needed for the summer and autumn terms of Year 6 and Year 7 transition,

All Year 6 children will receive a 'High School ready' pack from the Virtual School. This will include stationery, a photo frame for the 'First day at secondary school' photo and a voucher to put towards a school bag of their choice.

Once the child is at high school, extra support may be needed which can be discussed at the first PEP meeting or before if required.
