Therapeutic interventions for males

Therapeutic interventions

for male students in education can include:

  • Providing information: Help students learn about mental health symptoms and how to seek help.
  • Using positive role models: Invite male role models to share their experiences with mental health to help normalize seeking help.
  • Creating a trusting environment: Provide a safe space for students to feel vulnerable and open up. This could include a men-only space or social support.
  • Offering a variety of options: Provide both formal and informal therapy sessions, as well as fun activities to make sessions more engaging.
  • Using psychoeducation materials: Provide materials to help students improve their mental health knowledge.
  • Using solution-focused approaches: Use problem-solving and action-oriented approaches that are more appealing to men.
  • Delivering interventions during critical times: Consider running interventions around exams or before the winter break.
  • Labeling interventions: Label interventions as something other than mental health.
  • Providing short-term incentives: Consider offering a short-term incentive to attend mental health initiatives.

It's also important to be gender responsive and consider culturally appropriate settings.

Men's Issues to explore in counseling

Everyone has a different idea of what it means to be a man. Everyone faces different challenges. When you come to counseling, we will work together to understand what Men's Issues to focus on. Your experience in therapy will be your own, meaning that I will not pre-judge you and I will tailor my counseling approach to your specific goals and needs. Here are some possible topics that we could work on together:

  • Relationship Roles
  • Communication Strategies
  • Breaking Patterns
  • Creating New Patterns
  • Understanding Emotions
  • How to Give and Receive Support
  • Unhealthy Masculinity
  • Creating More Meaningful Relationships
  • Sex and Intimacy

It can be hard to discuss these topics. When you come to counseling, we will immediately focus on creating trust so that you can feel the freedom to express your thoughts without being judged. You deserve to have a space in your life to focus on yourself and discuss how you want to live your life.
