All children and young people in care should be given independent and impartial careers advice from year 9 on the full range of post 16 options.
Young people and their parents or carers must think about progression and where their course or training might lead to. It is worth asking schools or colleges what the next step is if the young person succeeds on the level of course or training that they have applied for.
Post-16 Transition
Young people who are Looked After and are above statutory school age remain part of St Helens Virtual School as a Post-16 student. This is in line with government requirements that all young people in England must continue in education or employment with training until the age of 18, and/or the end of Year 13.
This does not mean they must stay in school and there are many different options available such as:
- Further Education
- Sixth Form Colleges
- Training Providers
- Apprenticeships
- Employment
